In combination with Rosetta http://www.geocities.com/andy_callaway/ I
convert whole texts to phonetic in order to gain a better insight in
pronunciation.

Erm, isn't a long vowel/consonant (long consonants occur in a few languages)
indicated by a colon? That doubled i suggest a pronunciation like
'peeyeech'.

They indeed confuse. I'm Dutch and at school (and by tv) we hear Recieved (I
call it posh) and American English all the time, and very little regional,
Scots, Irish or other accents. When I'm in England (I have been there a few
times now) it really takes some effort trying to understand those people. A
friend of me often has a Scotsman (a friend of my friend) on the phone, and
they know everything about understandability based on pronunciation. The
Scotsman started talking with a posh accent and miraculously there was no
more need to say 'huh?' on the Dutch end of the line.

The other nice thing about Shavian is that its characters consist of such
simple forms. Writing is a lot less elaborate than in Roman. The question
is, how far can you go before you become dyslexic? Not only does the
Traditional Orthography make people dyslexic, letters which look alike can
be a real pain in the bum too (Look online for Tengwar, from Tolkien's Lord
of the Rings , and see what I mean. It takes only a few minutes to learn,
but confuses so quickly) So, how far can you go with a new writing system?

I don't exactly agree. Asking to standardise pronuciation could cause
more of a headache than learning to translate. As an American, for
instance, we say "RO dee oh" while an Austrailian would say "ro DAY oh"
for the word Rodeo. Reading the word, whether spelled by American
pronunciation or by Austrailian pronunciation, I would be able to
translate just like one should be able to do when one speaks with a
Brittish accent, and American accent, or any non-native accent, there
are going to be differences. Who's to say which is correct?

You're probably best off researching that with the University of Reading. They have the archives, as far as I know.

Dear Steve, The Oxford English Dictionary is available on CD Rom and so is
the brilliant Oxford Compendium which contains a pretty comprehensive
dictionary which PRONOUNCES the words for you in a clear English voice. It
also embraces a thesaurus and The Oxford Book of Quotations.
I agree that the advantage of Shavian phonetics is to allow all varieties
of pronunciation but one must have a standard if one is to teach English by
using the 48 symbols under the word written in the Roman alphabet.
Regards, Richard Cutler

Hello,

I just took a look at this file, and I am having problems with it.
Specifically, there are lots of places where Quikscript should be
showing, but Roman characters are showing instead. I took a look at
the source, and this is specifically happening with the following
font tag...

[font face="Kingsley"]

Of course, substitute for the brackets...

Any idea? I did take the file and convert all those Kingsleys over
to Jerome, which is the only font for Quikscript that I have been
able to find.

Thanks

Hi,

I just tried to get to the following site, but I can't get there...

http://www.shavian.f2s.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi

Does anyone know what happened to it? My provider just flipflopped
our routing, and I am wondering if something happened to this site,
or if my new routing is messed up.

Thanks

I have NO idea what has suddenly happened to this site. It looks as if F2S
has terminated my webspace, and I'm not sure why. I'll check it out. It might
involve a change in address, if they've deleted the website - I'll let you
know what the new address is if that is so.

Subject: Typing Shavian has never been easier!

In the Quickscript group on http://groups.yahoo.com/Read_Alphabet we have been discussing about a keyboard driver that would simplify typing in Quickscript, without having to use that shift-key. Take a look at the discussions through the website under the subject 'Macbeth'.

Please don't ignore this, this is rather revolutionary stuff for the Shavian and Quickscript Computer world! Give it a look. I don't have much time to explain everything, but I'm sure you can figure it out yourself, if not, others may want to help.

Anyway, here is the message I posted to the Quickscipt group (please install the Jerome Font first):

Ok, cuz no-one has tried to create a driver yet, I have skipped my homework and created this. It is far from perfect, and could use some fixes. You only need the normal Jerome font and www.tavultesoft.com 's Keyman, the Win 3.11 version, which does work under win '95+ . I dunno about other operating systems. http://www.tavultesoft.com/keyman/downloads/keyman32.exe is the url of the program.

You will type in a roman reform scheme, based on Newromaji (it's not really 100% real Newromaji, but anyway, it works)

Take a look into the .kmn file with a text editor to get an idea how it works.

His iz an egzympal tekst F tFpt wiH H kIbYrd-drFvD F hAve Jast mEd. it kAn stil Vz sam fiksiN, bat At lIst its redi fYr sam eksperimentiN.

I have never typed so fast in QS. I'm not even a fluent reader/writer in kwikskript, but this is really going to be interesting.

This file can use some fixing, but you can also come up with a different scheme of roman writing that gets converted into QS. Perhaps somebody can create a more efficient scheme. I have put c under c, x under S, u under M and q under N because those sounds occur quite often and a digraph would not be needed, 'cuz there were still some letters left.

AND perhaps we will one day have a driver that automatically converts text to proper senior Quickscript without the user actually paying attention to it.

I have posted a similar message to the Shavian group.

/hV,

I looked up the Ikonboard program on the web and saw that it was a program that runs on a server.

Unfortunately, I do not have access to a server!  All this high-speed access and I am forbidden to
host anything on the web!

For all,

The following is in Junior.ttf, a form of Quickscript whose font can be downloaded from the Read_Alpahbet fonts.  It was adapted from the nice Jerome font so that the characters do not touch.  This makes it easier for me to read the Quickscript.

Subject: New text uploaded

I have been having fun with the keyboard driver Ewout told us about.
It helps me to type faster. I have uploaded the first chapter of a
favorite book to the files/texts part of the board. It is called
Holes Ch 1.

Ewout and I are going separate ways about the contents of the
driver. He is favoring a newromanji keyboard. I am just modifying
the shavian keyboard so that it seems more natural to me for quickly
typing. It also reduces the number of capital letters
significantly.

The mapping I am experimenting with includes the following:

"s" + "h" > "S"
"n" + "g" > "N"
"z" + "z" > "Z"
"j" > "J"
"y" > "j"
"a" + "a" > "A"
"o" + "o" > "U"
"o" + "w" > "Q"
"a" + "h" > "y"
"e" + "a" > "I"
"a" + "i" > "E"
"I" > "F"
"o" + "u" > "M"
"o" + "y" > "q"
"a" + "w" > "Y"
"o" + "r" > "P"
"e" + "r" > "x"
"U" > "V"

But the good news about the driver is that you can modify it anyway
you like for your own tastes and preferences.

I plan to get a page out on the web describing how this can be done
in the next couple weeks - but after Thesis and finals.

Again, please take a look at the "Holes" text. I am open to lots of
criticism on my spelling methods. They take a little from
quickscript and mostly are from shavian.

I think if someone could come up with a way of typing the individual
sounds like "t,h" for thoth (thigh) and "t,h,e" for they, it would help
roman alphabet users to both think and read in shavian as they type.
hmm, maybe what we need is a forty key keyboard. :)

Subject: Some Shavian and Font Resources

I have written a short page of Shavian/Quickscript resources
including directions on how to upload fonts.

Eventually it will show how to load the
experimental keyboard drivers we have been talking about on the
Shavian and Quickscript boards.

The keyboard mapping programs use chording of the letters.

Ewout Stam's keyboard is organized according to the concepts of
NewRomaji, so that the most used characters in English use only one
keystroke.

I am working on a keyboard that transliterates some of the
capitalized letters to two letter cords that are easy for me to
remember.

A couple days ago I said that these resources could be downloaded
from my site. When I tested it, I could not download. I will create
a zipped version which I hope will download in the next week.

Have fun with it.
